Where to Stay in Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha): Beaches, Safari & City

Port Elizabeth - officially renamed Gqeberha in 2021, though both names remain in common use - sits at the western end of the Garden Route on Algoa Bay. It is South Africa’s fifth-largest city and serves as the eastern gateway to the Garden Route and the nearest urban centre to Addo Elephant National Park (70 kilometres north). Most visitors pass through rather than linger, but the beachfront and Donkin Reserve area reward an overnight stop.

Humewood and Summerstrand: Beachfront Zone

The southern suburbs of Humewood and Summerstrand run along a broad stretch of Blue Flag beaches facing Algoa Bay. This is where most tourist-facing hotels are concentrated - within walking distance of Brookes Pavilion, Kings Beach, and the Boardwalk Casino complex.

Budget (approximately R500–R900 per night as of 2026): Edward Hotel on Beach Road is a historic property with dated decor but a prime location directly above King’s Beach. Ask for a sea-facing room - the price is the same. Lungisa B&B in Summerstrand has clean, simple rooms run by a local family and is one of the better-value options in the beach zone.

Mid-range (approximately R1,200–R2,500 per night as of 2026): Radisson Blu Port Elizabeth sits in Summerstrand close to the Boardwalk complex with a pool and solid sea views from upper floors. Hacklewood Hill Country House in the suburb of Parsons Hill offers a more boutique experience - an Edwardian manor with 8 rooms, pool, and restaurant in a quieter residential setting 10 minutes from the beach.

Luxury (approximately R3,000–R6,000+ per night as of 2026): The Windermere Hotel in Humewood is an intimate 17-room property with a strong restaurant, four-poster beds in several rooms, and attentive service. For travellers combining a city stop with safari, Gorah Elephant Camp inside Addo (70 km north) is the most luxurious sleep in the region and worth the premium if the budget allows.

Newton Park and Northern Suburbs

Newton Park and the suburbs north of the N2 are primarily residential and business-travel oriented. Useful for travellers arriving late or with early morning flights from PE Airport (now Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport), but less appealing for leisure visitors.

Budget to mid-range (approximately R600–R1,800 per night as of 2026): Several guest lodges and B&Bs along William Moffett Expressway cater to business travellers. Protea Hotel Fire & Ice PE is the most recognisable brand name in this zone.

City Centre and Donkin Reserve

The historic city centre around Donkin Reserve, St George’s Park, and the Hill has colonial-era architecture and a few boutique guesthouses. It is less convenient than the beachfront zone but interesting for those curious about PE’s history - the pyramid on Donkin Reserve is a recognised landmark.

Mid-range (approximately R1,100–R2,200 per night as of 2026): Protea Hotel Marine offers a central city location with sea glimpses and corporate-level amenities. Several self-catering apartments near St George’s Park can be booked through local agents at reasonable rates for longer stays.

Using PE as a Safari Base

Addo Elephant National Park is South Africa’s third-largest national park and is malaria-free - a significant advantage. The main rest camp (Addo Main Camp, 70 km north of PE) has chalets, rondavels, and camping from approximately R500 per chalet per night as of 2026 SANParks rates for international visitors. Book SANParks accommodation directly through the SANParks online reservation system at least two to three months ahead for peak periods.

Private lodges adjacent to or within Addo include Gorah Elephant Camp (luxury), River Bend Lodge, and Hopefield Country House - these are the right choice if you want guided game drives and full board included.

Transport Notes

Port Elizabeth Airport (Chief Dawid Stuurman International) has direct flights from Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban. FlySafair and Airlink are the main operators.
