Where to Stay in Jeffreys Bay: Surf Town, Marina & Beach Guesthouses

Jeffreys Bay - J-Bay to anyone who surfs - has one of the most celebrated right-hand point breaks in the world. Supertubes, a kilometre-long wave that barrels at speed down the point, draws professionals and dedicated amateurs from every surfing nation, particularly during the WSL Championship Tour event held in July. But J-Bay is also a relaxed, affordable beach town with good seafood, long beaches, and a pace that suits families and non-surfers equally well. It is 75 kilometres east of Port Elizabeth.

Da Gama Road and Supertubes: Surf Zone

Da Gama Road runs parallel to the point break itself, with a string of surf lodges and guesthouses within earshot of the waves. Staying here means waking up to the sound of the surf and walking to Supertubes in two minutes. This is the zone for dedicated surfers and those who want to be as close as possible to the break.

Budget (approximately R450–R900 per night as of 2026): Island Vibe Guesthouse and Surf Camp is the best-known backpacker-style surf lodge in J-Bay - lively social atmosphere, board storage, surf lessons arranged. Diaz 15 Guest Lodge on Diaz Road has clean private rooms and a surf-friendly ground-floor setup. Several surf camps on the point rent rooms from R400–R650 per person sharing.

Mid-range (approximately R1,100–R2,400 per night as of 2026): The Swell Boutique Hotel on Da Gama Road has 10 rooms, a small pool, and direct views of the point break. If you want to watch the surf from your room, this is the pick. Supertubes Guesthouse is another solid mid-range option with a dedicated surf storage room and a knowledgeable host who can advise on swell and tide conditions.

Luxury (approximately R2,500–R5,000+ per night as of 2026): J-Bay does not have a true luxury hotel market in the five-star sense. The most upmarket experience comes from private beach villas available through local agents - four- to five-bedroom homes near the point rent for approximately R4,000–R8,000 per night as of 2026 and work particularly well for groups.

Kabeljouws and Central Beach

Central J-Bay, around the main beach below the Fountains Mall and along Kabeljouws beach, is slightly south of Supertubes and appeals to families, non-surfers, and visitors who want a flatter, safer beach. The water at Kabeljouws is calmer than the point.

Budget to mid-range (approximately R600–R1,800 per night as of 2026): Several guesthouses along Beach Road offer sea views from upper-floor rooms at reasonable rates. Self-catering cottages close to Kabeljouws Beach are popular with families staying a week or more - rates start from approximately R900 per night as of 2026.

Marina Martinique

Marina Martinique is a residential canal estate a few kilometres south of the main J-Bay town, with navigable waterways, boat moorings, and a protected beach on the bay side. It feels more exclusive and quieter than central J-Bay.

Mid-range to luxury (approximately R1,500–R4,500 per night as of 2026): Holiday villas on the canals are the dominant accommodation type - book through local rental agents. Most have private braai facilities, jetties, and canal access for kayaking. The marina area suits families who want space, privacy, and a secure environment.

St Francis Bay - 15 Minutes South

St Francis Bay and Cape St Francis, 18 kilometres south of J-Bay, offer a white-painted village aesthetic, the Cape St Francis lighthouse, and another respected surf break (Bruce’s Beauties at Cape St Francis). Accommodation here is quieter and somewhat more expensive for equivalent quality.

Mid-range (approximately R1,400–R3,000 per night as of 2026): St Francis Links Golf Estate has a boutique lodge with golf and waterway access. Ocean Blue Guest Lodge in St Francis Bay is a well-reviewed four-star property with an excellent restaurant.

When to Visit

The J-Bay Open (WSL Championship Tour) typically runs in July, drawing the world’s top surfers. The town fills up completely during contest week - book two to three months ahead and expect significantly higher prices. Outside of contest week, June through August offers the best swell consistency. December and January are the domestic holiday peak; beaches and guesthouses are busy but rates are comparable to the rest of the year.

Surf Shop and Board Rental Notes

J-Bay has multiple surf shops on the main drag renting boards from approximately R150–R300 per day as of 2026. Ocean Blue Surfshop and Billabong both offer lessons. Beginners should note that Supertubes is not suitable for learners - instructors use the more forgiving sections further south of the point for lessons.
