Where to Stay in Hermanus: Whale Season, Cliff Paths & Wine Country

Hermanus is South Africa’s premier whale-watching destination, sitting 120 kilometres east of Cape Town on Walker Bay. Southern right whales visit the bay from June through November, with peak sightings in September and October. The town is compact enough to walk everywhere, and the cliff path - a 12-kilometre trail above the shoreline - connects most of the accommodation zones.

New Harbour and Town Centre

The town centre clusters around Main Road and Market Square, with the Old Harbour and New Harbour at the seafront below. This is where most cafés, restaurants, and the famous whale crier operate. Accommodation here suits visitors who want to walk to restaurants and be close to the cliff path without needing a car.

Budget (approximately R550–R900 per night as of 2026): Windsor Hotel on Main Road is an older three-star that holds its own for value - ask for a sea-facing room as the rate difference is modest. Several B&Bs along Church Street and Dirkie Uys Street offer double rooms in the R600–R850 range.

Mid-range (approximately R1,200–R2,800 per night as of 2026): Crayfish Lodge Guest House has eight rooms, some with sea views, and a genuine log fireplace for winter nights. Hermanus Boutique Suites on Harbour Road offers apartment-style suites with self-catering kitchens, useful for longer stays.

Luxury (approximately R3,500–R8,000+ per night as of 2026): Birkenhead House perches on the cliff path west of New Harbour with 11 rooms, two pools (one sea-facing, one heated), and artwork from the owners’ personal collection. It is one of the Liz McGrath Collection properties and consistently rated among the best small hotels in South Africa. The Marine Hermanus, part of the same group, is larger (42 rooms) and directly above the cliff path - both are within sight of the bay where whales breach.

Grotto Beach and Voelklip

Hermanus has a long beach that wraps east from New Harbour past Grotto Beach, a Blue Flag beach, and into Voelklip. Staying in this area (a five-minute drive from town) gives direct beach access and a quieter residential feel.

Mid-range (approximately R1,400–R3,000 per night as of 2026): Moby’s Travellers’ Lodge sits above Grotto Beach with self-catering chalets and a communal braai area. It works particularly well for families or groups who want more space. Arc at Hermanus is a newer boutique offering with modern rooms and a pool closer to Grotto Beach.

Wine Country - Stanford and Hemel-en-Aarde Valley

The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, a 15-minute drive from Hermanus, produces some of the Cape’s finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Hamilton Russell Vineyards and Bouchard Finlayson are the landmark estates. Stanford, a whitewashed Victorian village 20 minutes east, is smaller, quieter, and increasingly popular for weekend escapes from Cape Town.

Mid-range to luxury (approximately R1,800–R5,000 per night as of 2026): Stanford Valley Guest Farm offers farm-stay accommodation with excellent stargazing (low light pollution) and walking trails. Across the valley, Beaumont Family Wines has a small number of farmhouse suites for guests who want to stay on a working wine estate.

When to Visit

Whale season (June–November): Peak demand and prices. September and October are the best months for whale sightings and comfortable temperatures. Book two to three months ahead for those months, especially Birkenhead House and The Marine.

Summer (December–February): Good beach weather, no whales, lower accommodation rates than peak season. Grotto Beach is at its best.

Shoulder (March–May): Quietest period. Excellent value, mild weather, occasional late-season whale sightings through November.

Getting There

Hermanus has no public transport link from Cape Town. Self-drive via the N2 and R43 takes approximately 1.5 hours. The Bettys Bay and Clarence Drive route (R44) via Pringle Bay and Kogel Bay is longer but extraordinarily scenic - allow 2.5 hours. A private transfer from Cape Town runs approximately R900–R1,400 as of 2026 depending on the operator.
