Where to Stay in the Drakensberg: Northern, Central & Southern Berg

The Drakensberg is not a single destination but a 200-kilometre arc of escarpment forming the boundary between KwaZulu-Natal and Lesotho. Where you stay depends entirely on which section you want to explore, because distances between the Northern, Central, and Southern Berg are significant - two or three hours of driving separates the extremes. Choose your zone before booking. The Drakensberg is malaria-free throughout.

Northern Drakensberg: Royal Natal and the Amphitheatre

The Northern Berg, centred on Royal Natal National Park, holds the Amphitheatre - an eight-kilometre wall of basalt cliff that is among the most photographed mountain faces in Africa. The Tugela Falls, second tallest in the world, drops off this face. This zone suits serious hikers and those wanting dramatic mountain vistas.

Budget (approximately R550–R1,000 per night as of 2026): Thendele Camp inside Royal Natal National Park is a SANParks facility with basic but well-positioned rondavels and bungalows directly below the Amphitheatre. Book through the SANParks online system months in advance for peak periods. Didima Camp in Cathedral Peak section (technically Central Berg) is similar in style and equally popular.

Mid-range (approximately R1,500–R3,000 per night as of 2026): Amphitheatre Backpackers and Lodge in the Injisuthi area has a range of rooms from dorm to en-suite and serves hikers through-routing the Berg to Royal Natal. Cathedral Peak Hotel, a historic family resort dating to 1939, offers all-inclusive packages and guided walking routes from the front door.

Luxury (approximately R4,000–R8,000+ per night as of 2026): Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse is a boutique lodge near Monk’s Cowl with eight rooms, exceptional farm-to-table dinners, and no children under 12 - a genuinely peaceful retreat. Rates include all meals, which is standard at this end of the Berg.

Central Drakensberg: Giants Castle and Cathedral Peak

The Central Berg is the most visited section, with Giants Castle Game Reserve protecting a breeding population of bearded vultures (lammergeiers). The San rock art sites at Main Caves and Battle Cave are accessible from Giants Castle camp without a guide. Cathedral Peak, north of Giants Castle, is a popular hiking zone and has a broader spread of mid-range accommodation.

Budget (approximately R600–R1,100 per night as of 2026): Giants Castle Camp (SANParks) has chalets from approximately R740 per night for international visitors as of 2026. The camp sits at 1,730 metres with direct views of the escarpment wall. Self-catering only - bring supplies.

Mid-range (approximately R1,400–R2,800 per night as of 2026): Inkosana Lodge near Champagne Valley combines a hostel’s social atmosphere with comfortable en-suite rooms and organises guided hikes. Champagne Sports Resort is a large family-oriented property with a pool complex, tennis, golf, and guided activities - not intimate, but good value for families and groups.

Luxury (approximately R3,500–R7,000+ per night as of 2026): Nest Hotel near Champagne Valley is a 71-room four-star resort with a wellness centre, multiple pools, and guided excursions. It runs all-inclusive packages that make sense if you want your activities arranged from a single base.

Southern Drakensberg: Sani Pass, Drakensberg Gardens, and Lotheni

The Southern Berg is less developed and sees fewer visitors, which is precisely the appeal for those seeking solitude. Sani Pass, the only 4x4 road route into Lesotho, starts here. Sani Top Chalet at the Lesotho border post is the highest pub in Africa (2,874 metres). The Cobham and Garden Castle sections have good day walks and basic SANParks camping.

Budget (approximately R400–R800 per night as of 2026): Drakensberg Wilderness Reserve campsite and basic rondavels at Cobham Nature Reserve. Self-catering, minimal facilities, exceptional solitude.

Mid-range (approximately R1,800–R3,500 per night as of 2026): Sani Lodge Backpackers at the foot of Sani Pass has comfortable rooms and arranges the 4x4 shuttle up the pass. Drakensberg Gardens Golf & Spa Resort in the southern foothills is a self-contained resort suitable for families.

Altitude and Weather

All Drakensberg accommodation sits above 1,000 metres. Summers (November–February) bring afternoon thunderstorms that can be dramatic but rarely last long. Winters (June–August) are cold at night - temperatures drop below zero at higher elevations. Snow on the escarpment is possible June through August. Pack layers regardless of the season.
