Where to Stay in Johannesburg: Safe Neighbourhoods Guide

Johannesburg’s accommodation geography is shaped by safety as much as by price. Unlike Cape Town, where almost any neighbourhood is walkable, Joburg requires choosing a base carefully — then using Uber for all movement. The city spreads across a large footprint, but the four main areas for visitors are well-defined. For a broader orientation, see the Johannesburg city hub.

Sandton — The Safest and Most Convenient Choice

Hotels from ZAR 1,500 to ZAR 4,000+ per night

Sandton is Joburg’s financial district and the primary recommendation for first-time visitors. It’s the most polished area in the city: walkable in daylight, relatively low crime, international-standard restaurants and cafés within easy reach, and the Gautrain connecting directly to OR Tambo Airport (15 minutes, ZAR 200 one-way).

Nelson Mandela Square is the social focal point — a piazza-style open space with a large Mandela statue, surrounded by restaurants, the Sandton City mall, and several upmarket hotels. The Four Seasons Westcliff, the Maslow, Sandton Sun, and several other business-grade hotels are within a short Uber from here.

Who it suits: First-time visitors to Joburg, business travellers, families, anyone who wants to arrive and feel oriented without needing to navigate. The trade-off is that Sandton is relatively anodyne — corporate and efficient, not characterful.

Neighbourhoods to use in Sandton: Sandton CBD, Sandhurst, Morningside, and Illovo all work well. Illovo and Parkmore are slightly quieter residential extensions of the Sandton core.

Practical note: The Gautrain station at Sandton is the key anchor. If you’re arriving from OR Tambo, the Gautrain drops you here. All Sandton hotels are within a short Uber of the station.

Rosebank — Arts, Cafés, and a Good Middle Ground

Hotels from ZAR 800 to ZAR 2,000 per night

Rosebank sits between Sandton and the CBD, about 4 km south of Sandton. It’s an upmarket suburb with a mall (The Zone @ Rosebank), a good Sunday Rooftop Market, several gallery spaces, and a range of restaurants and coffee shops along Jan Smuts Avenue and the surrounding streets.

Hotels in Rosebank tend to be slightly smaller and more individual than Sandton’s tower hotels — The Blackbrick, the 54 on Bath, and various boutique guesthouses give it a more interesting feel. The Gautrain stops at Rosebank station, making airport access easy.

Who it suits: Travellers who want somewhere between Sandton’s sterility and Maboneng’s edge. Good for arts-oriented visitors — the Everard Read gallery and Circa London gallery are both here.

Price note: Mid-range rooms in Rosebank from ZAR 1,000–1,800 per night for a solid 3-to-4-star hotel. Budget guesthouses from ZAR 700–900.

Maboneng — The Most Interesting Choice

Accommodation from ZAR 400 (dorm) to ZAR 1,500 per night

Maboneng (eastern CBD) is the neighbourhood for visitors who want character over convenience. A regenerated industrial district with galleries, street art, independent restaurants, and the best Sunday market in the city — it has more soul than Sandton and more interesting street life than Rosebank.

The accommodation anchor is Curiocity Backpackers on Fox Street — the best hostel in Joburg, with dorms from ZAR 400 and private rooms from ZAR 900. Well-managed, secure, and directly in the heart of the precinct. Beyond Curiocity, Fox Street Apartments offer self-catering studios from ZAR 800.

Who it suits: Solo travellers, budget travellers, design-oriented visitors, anyone spending more than a couple of nights in Joburg and wanting to experience the city beyond its corporate shell.

Safety notes for Maboneng: In daylight and on Sundays (market day), Maboneng is lively and well-populated. Midweek evenings are quieter and require more care. Always Uber in and out — don’t walk to/from nearby areas. Ask your accommodation about current conditions before going out at night. The Curiocity team is good at providing up-to-date guidance.

Melrose and Illovo — Quiet Residential, Good Value

Guesthouses and B&Bs from ZAR 700 to ZAR 1,500 per night

Melrose and Illovo are quiet, tree-lined residential suburbs southeast and south of Sandton respectively. They don’t have the density of restaurants and cafés that Sandton or Rosebank offer, but they’re genuinely comfortable, safe, and offer better value for money than the Sandton hotel towers.

The Peech Hotel in Melrose is the standout property here — 28 rooms in a green-certified boutique hotel with a garden, pool, and better environmental credentials than most. From ZAR 1,800. Various B&Bs and guesthouses in both suburbs run ZAR 700–1,200 for a comfortable private room.

Who it suits: Those wanting a quieter residential feel, repeat visitors who know the city, anyone prioritising space and value over central convenience.

Airport Area — OR Tambo (Short Layovers Only)

From ZAR 1,200 per night

The OR Tambo International Airport area has several transit hotels — the Airport Sun (from ZAR 1,500) and various business hotels on the R24 — designed purely for overnight stays between flights. The Gautrain runs from OR Tambo to Sandton in 15 minutes (ZAR 200), so staying at the airport rather than Sandton is generally not worth the trade-off in experience unless your layover is very short (under 12 hours).

If you have a same-day connection or an early departure, the Airport Sun’s direct terminal access is useful. For anything longer, take the Gautrain into Sandton.

Neighbourhoods to Avoid

Hillbrow and Yeoville — historically significant Joburg suburbs now with significant crime and infrastructure decay. Not suitable for tourists at any time of day.

The CBD after dark — Braamfontein (the CBD’s northern edge) is fine on weekday daytimes for Constitution Hill and the Neighbourgoods Market, but avoid after dark. Avoid the CBD south of Bree Street entirely.

Berea and Jeppestown — not tourist areas; avoid.

Sandton is consistently the safest and most convenient area for visitors. Rosebank is a solid second choice — slightly less polished but more interesting.

At night midweek, it's more variable — always Uber in and out, don't walk with your phone visible, and ask accommodation about current conditions. It's the most interesting part of Joburg, but requires more caution than Sandton.
How much does a hotel in Johannesburg cost?
Budget hostels run from ZAR 400 per dorm bed. Mid-range hotels in Rosebank or Melrose: ZAR 800–2,000 per night. Sandton's business hotels: ZAR 1,500–4,000. Luxury properties like the Saxon: from ZAR 6,500. Prices as of 2026.
