South Africa gains a new direct link to Europe next month. Air Europa will launch nonstop service between Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) and Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas (MAD) from 24 June 2026, operating three times weekly on Boeing 787 Dreamliners.

The schedule runs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from Madrid at 15:05, arriving Johannesburg early the following morning. Return flights depart Johannesburg on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 03:10, landing in Madrid at 13:20. Total flight time is just over ten hours in each direction.

This is the first direct Spain–South Africa connection since Iberia suspended operations on the corridor in 2019 — a seven-year gap. The service is operated on Air Europa’s flagship wide-body, with both Business Class and Economy available. Tickets are already on sale at aireuropa.com.

Why this matters for travellers

For anyone flying in from Europe, a Madrid connection now opens up one-stop access from over 60 cities on Air Europa’s Spanish domestic network, including Barcelona, Bilbao, Seville, Valencia and the Canary Islands. It also gives South African travellers a gateway to Spain and onward connections to Latin America, where Air Europa maintains a strong network.

Until now, most European visitors to Johannesburg connected through Gulf hubs or Amsterdam, Frankfurt or London. A direct Iberian Peninsula link cuts journey time for travellers originating in Spain and Portugal.

What to know before you book

South African passport holders do not require a visa to enter Spain or the wider Schengen Area for stays under 90 days. European Union and Schengen passport holders similarly enter South Africa visa-free for up to 30 or 90 days depending on nationality — check your specific allowance before travel. Our visa requirements guide covers the key details.

OR Tambo International is 25 km east of central Johannesburg. Budget 45–60 minutes for road transfers, longer during peak hours. Madrid Barajas is served by Metro Line 8, with a 30-minute ride to the city centre.

For travellers looking at onward connections within South Africa after landing at JNB — to Cape Town, Durban, George or the Kruger region — domestic fares can be competitive when booked early. Our guide to flights to South Africa has practical information on planning connections.

The inaugural flight departs Madrid on 24 June 2026. With summer peak season beginning, early booking is advisable.
